This week marks a significant milestone for Sirona Technologies: we've shipped our first Direct Air Capture (DAC) pilot plant to Kenya.
In March, our team embarked on an ambitious journey to design and build our fourth-generation DAC machine—affectionately dubbed The Beast. The goal was clear: transition from small-scale prototypes to a fully operational machine capable of capturing CO₂ at a scale necessary for deployment.
Over the following months, the team poured countless hours into refining every aspect of the machine—its design, fluid dynamics, controls, auxiliary systems, and process conditions. By mid-July, after an intense sprint, The Beast came to life in our workshop. Moving from high-level requirements to a fully functional machine in such a short time was a testament to the team's extraordinary dedication and hard work.
In August, we focused on automation, enabling The Beast to operate autonomously. Watching the system transition from manual operation to automated processes felt like a graduating moment for the team.
By early September, the decision was made to deploy the machine as our first on-site pilot plant to kickoff our Project Jacaranda in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, next to our storage partner Cella. The challenge? We had just four weeks to prepare and ship the system to ensure its timely arrival before the holiday season. Despite the tight timeline, our engineers rose to the occasion, delivering exceptional results under pressure.
Last week, we said goodbye to The Beast as it left our workshop, securely packed in a shipping container and ready for its journey to Kenya. Once it arrives, the pilot plant will serve as the foundation for our efforts to scale DAC technology and demonstrate its potential to combat climate change.
This milestone marks a significant step forward in Sirona's mission to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future. We can't wait to share updates and photos of the pilot plant in action in Kenya.
Stay tuned for more updates as The Beast begins its next chapter.
